The pearl of Africa turns 58
On October 9th 2020, Uganda marked its 58th anniversary since it freed itself from the yoke of British rule. The landlocked country in East Africa, encompassing the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains and vast Lake Victoria was occupied by the British Empire in 1894. Fifty-eight years later, in 1962, after a bloody stuggle the country got independence.
Ugandans of all walks of life took the day off to celebrate the nation’s independence day and sex workers weren’t left behind either.
Sex workers mark the day in a special way
In central Uganda’s district of Buikwe, patriotic sex workers decided to mark the day in a special way they only know how.
Free sex anyone?……sorry half price only for today
As a sign of being patriotic and supporting president Yoweri Museveni, whom they say as brought stability and peace in the country, the sex workers decided to slash their pieces by half on independence day.

It all started as a joke before it took a life of its own
The sex workers in Lugazi town started it as a joke in the morning when one of them call a local FM radio station and announced that on independence day the sex workers would slash their usual price by half.
“Although we are sex workers we are patriotic and love our country. We also love president Museveni because he has brought peace. As we celebrate the 58th independence we want to give back to our clients by reducing our sex prices by half,” Zuena Nakayi, one of the sex workers announced to all and sundry.
Deal of a lifetime
On an ordinary day Zuena said that they usually charged UGsh 5000 (US$1.35) for a quickie but on independence day they will only charge UGsh2500.

Men go gaga with sexual exictment
Since they made the announcement, Zuena says the offer was immediately taken up by enthusiastic men which saw many sex workers and escorts smile all the way to the bank.
”By 9.00, when the curfew is supposed to kick off, most of us had slept with more than four men. Some of us had even slept with seven men,” a happy Zuena said beaming.
The sex offer was an eye opener
Bena Nankya, another sex worker, added that the sex offer made her realise that many men needed their services but due to scarcity of money most of them end up suffering from blue balls.Â
”After announcing that we were offering our services at half the usual price, many men came to us to enjoy themselves. Just today I have today slept with seven men yet on other days I normally sleep with just two or three,” she said.
Every day should be independence day
A man who took up the offer only identified as Kapo said the sex offer came at the right time and at half the price he can afford to buy sex once in a while.
”I wish every day was independence day so that we buy sex cheaply.” he said.
