At least 15 sex workers from Tanzania have been arrested in Southern Uganda district of Masaka.
The sex workers have since been put under quarantine for 14 days at Masaka hospital to establish whether they have the deadly COVID 19.
The arrest took place after residents residing at several landing sites on Lake Victoria in Masaka district complained to authorities that the sex workers flocking into their areas were putting their lives at risk and may expose them to COVID-19.
The local chief at Namirembe landing site, Chris Muwanga said; ”Many Tanzanian sex workers are coming to Uganda. Although the official border entry to Tanzania is closed, they somehow sneak in through the porous border.”
Cause of concern

Muwanga main worry is that the Tanzanian sex workers sleep with many men, especially reckless fishermen who then go home and risk infecting their families.
”One sex worker can sleep with over 5 men in a day. If such a woman has COVID19, over 100 men would be infected in one month” said Muwanga.

The administrator singled out Kyotera sub-county as the main entry point.
Masaka district chairman, Herman Sentongo blamed the recent rise in the number of COVID19 cases in the district as a result of illegal entry by the Tanzanian sex workers.
” Those sex workers are infecting our people. They stealthily enter the district and sleep with many men everyday. At Kasensero landing site we have got 11 cases of COVID19. At Magombe landing site there are 16 cases and in Masaka town we have 40 cases.” said Sentongo.
