Sex in Mombasa: Sex workers say no and refuse to open their legs for Boda Boda riders
No Sex for you
For the next 7 days Boda Boda (motor cycle) riders in Mombasa, Kenya will have to survive without steamy sex.
This is after sex workers drawn from the vast Mombasa county joined Kenyans in condemning acts of sexual violence meted on a female motorist in Nairobi last Friday.
Nkoko Injuu Africa, a CBO that champions the rights of sex workers, through its Executive Director Maryline Laini, said that in solidarity with the female motorist, its members will not be offering sexual services to bodaboda riders for the next one week.
âThese people are our clients, but from today, no registered sex worker will offer sexual services to any bodaboda rider in this region. If a member is found with a bodaboda client within the period, she will be deregistered,â said Laini, local media reported.

The sex ban for Boda boda riders come hot on the heels of the government directive to ban all Boda Boda services across the country over the matter. On the international women’s day President Uhuru Kenyatta made the announcement and directed the National Transport Services Authority (NTSA) to register all riders afresh in a bid to weed out criminals and bad elements within Boda Boda industry.
“I want to refer to the video circulating. It was disheartening and it was only one of these incidents shown. I have ordered a crackdown on all boda boda operators starting here in Nairobi and moving across the country. I know we are in the busy season of politics, and some will say the government is harassing small business owners. There is no such thing,” he said.
“Riding a boda boda is not a license to do drive-by shootings, and most definitely for you to strip and remove dignity from our women. We want to support our boda bodas, but even these women are your customers. Treat them with respect.” Uhuru said.
Laini ehoed the President’s sentiments and noted that denying boda boda riders sexual services was one way of demanding justice for women who are subjected to sexual assault in public spaces.
âWe know this is where we get our basic needs and fend for our families but we are ready to go hungry for this type of violence to come to an end,â Laini said.
