Like mother like daughter but not on this…
Sex workers in Uganda have moved to dissuade their children from following on their footsteps when they come of age.
The network of sex workers led organizations have rolled out strategies to protect their children against getting interested in selling their bodies as much as the work puts food on the table.
Prostitution is no child’s play
One way to ensure their children view prostitution as a viable career is by strongly supporting the government’s proposed policy on sexuality education.
”We believe that the policy will help the children of sex workers to get exposed to issues related to sex when they are still young so that when they grow up they can know better.” said Naomi Mujuni, the program manager of the network.

Mujuni added that the policy is also meant to educate the children on safe sex and the right age to get involved in sex.
No child of mine will be a sex worker
Zubeda Kawomera, one of the sex workers said that she doesn’t wish her kids to follow her example.
”Although I earn my living from sex work, I do not want my children to know that that is how I get money to feed them. I also do not want them to do the same when they grow up and that is why I take them to good schools.”
In 2018 the government developed a sexuality education framework to guide the teaching of sexuality related issues to the children in schools.
While some religious leaders are opposed to the policy sex workers support it and say it is good.
