Sex Workers In Uganda Offer Sex To Soldiers At Half Price

Sex workers in eastern Uganda city of Jinja on January 26 offered sex to soldiers at half of the usual price.

On other days sex is offered at 10,000 Ugandan shillings per round .But on that date they offered it at 5000 shillings.

Why did they do so? According to one of the leaders of the sex workers in Jinja city, Naome Mugaja, they did so to appreciate the role the soldiers played in liberating Uganda.

That date is a public holiday and is known as the liberation day. The national ceremony was held in Jinja city and the president of the country Yoweri Museveni was the chief guest.

Uganda was liberated from dictators in 1986 by Yoweri Museveni who led a 5 yr guerrilla war in which thousands of people were killed. He was declared president on January 26 in 1986 and since then that day is celebrated in commemoration of the victory of the guerrilla war.

Many soldiers were deployed in the city to guard the president and also maintain peace allover the city and the surrounding areas. Over 1000 other soldiers were also in the city to be part of the parade at the ceremony.

Mugaja said that they decided to cut down the price because they wanted to say thank you to the soldiers on that day,and also to attract them for their services.

She said that the cutting down of the price resulted in big numbers of the soldiers going for their services.

One of the sex workers only identified as Kanulagye said that since 24 to 26 she slept with over 15 soldiers and she does not regret that they paid half the price because she ended up getting many customers.
