Uganda Government has instituted and sent a team of security personnel to investigate the ongoing murders of sex workers in central Uganda‘s district of Sembabule.

This has come about after Sembabule district woman MP Mary Begumisa raised a matter of national importance about the spate of murders on sex workers in the district that has left residents living in fear.

Begumisa has informed parliament that the district has had 10 sex workers murdered since October last year. All the murders have taken place in the district headquarters’ town also called Sembabule.

She said the sex workers who have lost life are first raped and later strangled to death. She urged the relevant ministries to quickly come to their intervention as the security team on the ground has done their best.

Prime minister Robinah Nabbanja in response has informed parliament that she has already been informed about the murders in the district and a team has been instituted to find what really happened and also arrest the culprits.

Police said in a statement that it has closed 2 brothels where the killing has been taking place. It said that the killing of the sex workers was done in the same two places.

It said that all the killed, apart from one are new people in the area. The one killed on Monday had just spent 4 days in the area.

Robinah Nabbanja has advised the sex worker to abandon their work because it has become risky and instead get funds from government to start up income generating activities.
