Are Penis Veins Normal?

It is very normal for a penis to have veins. Veins are important as they allow blood to flow to the penis to give you an erection and take the blood back to the heart. Some dicks have veins that are more visible than others. The vein shape and size can change with time depending on many factors. Blood vessel surgery and also injury can lead to a change in size and shape as well.

What Contributes To A Veiny Penis?

Penis vein visibility is caused by many factors including the thickness of the penis skin and the size of the veins. When your penis erects, oxygenated blood from your heart travels to the corpus cavernosum and corpus spongiosum through your arteries to the penis shaft. The blood stays at this point until the penis is no longer erect. The blood drains through the veins across the penis’s surface. The increase in blood flow makes the veins appear larger than usual. These veins cannot be seen clearly when your penis is not erect since very little blood flows through them.

Do Veins Have An  Impact On Ejaculation Or Erection?

The size of the veins in the penis has no impact on your ability to maintain an erection. The size of the veins doesn’t affect the strength and or volume of the erection. However, there are some conditions like blood clots that may impede blood flow which may affect the size of the veins and other effects on erectile function.

What If The Veins Are More Prominent Than Usual?

The size of the penis can vary sometimes after sexual activity or because of an underlying condition that may affect penis blood flow. When you get an erection about 4.5 ounces of blood flows inside the penis to the spongy tissues until the erection goes away. The blood from these tissues flows back to your heart through veins in your penis making them look more swollen than at other times. Veins in your penis are easily noticeable, especially after sex.

Varicocele

This refers to enlarged veins in the scrotum. They are also similar to varicose veins that appear on your legs. Around 10-15 men out of 100 have varicocele in the scrotum. In some cases, they are not usually a cause of concern. In some cases, however, varicocele causes pain that feels dull and aching and also sharpens after exercise. The pain may feel less acute as you lay down or gradually gets worse throughout the day. If this condition is left untreated it can affect blood flow out of your penis and can go on to interfere with sperm production. Varicocele may cause shrinking of the affected testicle, infertility, loss of sperm production and also motility.

Blood Clots

A blood clot commonly known as thrombosis may develop in your veins when a mass of blood cells bunch together in a blood vessel. The clots limit the blood flow through the vessel. Penile blood clots mostly develop in the penile dorsal vein, located at the top of the penis shaft. This condition is commonly referred to as penile Mondor’s disease. The blood clots cause pain which is easily noticeable when you get an erection. These affected veins may feel firm even when your penis is not erect.

Takeaway

In most circumstances, there’s no need to worry about penis veins even if they look more pronounced than usual. However, if the appearance of the veins in your penis causes you distress, you can talk with your doctor. You can also see your doctor if you are experiencing swelling of your penis in one or both testicles, pain during an erection and or an ejaculation, and veins that feel hard or tender when touched.
