Scientists have revealed that gaping or using e-cigarettes has an adverse effect on sperm count, and size of the testicles and lowers sexual desire in men.
An electronic cigarette also known as a vape is a device that consists of a liquid container, atomizer and battery and mimics tobacco smoking.
Indifferent to tobacco, the capes inhale and exhale vapour. It is commonly referred to as using an e-cigarette. Turkish scientists conducted research to establish the effect of smoking on sexual health. Conducting the research on rats, they observed that exposure to e-cigarette vapours and cigarette smoke contributes to the shrinking of testicular size. The scientists also discovered stress indicators in the rats’ vaginal tracts and blood.
The rats were also exposed to the e-cigarette vapours or smoked twice a day for a single hour each time while the control group received none.
A study published in the Spanish language journal Revista Internacional de Andrologia shows that smoking is significantly more harmful. The researchers wrote in their report, “It should be considered that although [e-cigarette] liquid has been introduced as harmless in smoking cessation studies, it could increase oxidative stress and cause morphological changes in the testicle,”
Rats exposed to cigarette smoke had the lowest sperm count compared to the three groups studied. The rats that were exposed to cigarette smoke had lighter and smaller testes than the unexposed groups. The study further shows that e-cigarette liquid can cause morphological changes in the testes and also increase oxidative stress. The Danish scientists also conducted a study on 2,000 men in 2020 and found that those who used e-cigarettes on a daily had a lower sperm count in comparison to non-vapers.
