Sex workers VS State Sex workers

Sex workers operating at Kamwokya on the outskirts of Kampala have expressed their displeasure with the government by going on riot.

The workers locked horns with the local police who had to fire tear gas canisters into the demonstrators to disperse them. The sex workers are furious with the Government over blocking the main road leading to their brothels which has made business very difficult.

”We no longer get customers. Men fear coming here to our brothels because of the heavy presence of police in the area.” Amina Nakawombe, one of the sex workers in the area biterly complained..

There are at least three brothels operating in that area with each packed with dozens of sex workers, all of which have been closed.

.”We have run short of money and can no longer afford to support ourselves.”

Life in Kamwokya

Kamwokya is one of the many ghettos facing the city of Kampala. Majority of residents here earn a living working as casual laborers ranging  from house maids to street maids. Ugandan Opposition leader and 2021 Presidential candidate, Bobi Wine hails from Kamwokya and it is from here that Bobi Wine got the title  ”the gheto president.”

Bobi Wine’s political party, ” NUP” is located  in the area which attracted the police to swoop in. A while back Ugandan police spokesman, Fred Enanga, went on public record and claimed they had intelligence that NUP members were using their office as a base to organize deadly riots during the elections.

Since elections took place last month, roads leading to Kamwokya have been closed. With roads closed clients have dwindled and disappeared. With election over but the area still closed off the sex workers want the roads reopened.

Its not only sex workers who are unhappy. Small entrepreneurs joined the sex workers in exchanging blows with the police.
