Bugiri, a renowned sex hotspot

When Bugiri town council in eastern Uganda introduced a parking yard at Naluwerere trading center for long-distance trucks that ply the Mombasa-Kampala-Kigali-Burundi-Democratic Republic of Congo route, the truck drivers were not amused.

Naluwerere is renowned as a sex hotspot as most truck drivers have always come here for sex workers since 1970’s.

Relocating to Idudi where teen prostitutes are in plenty

The truck drivers preferred parking along the highway instead of the designated areas that charge parking fees.

However, a year ago the drivers relocated to a small trading center,12 km away from Naluwerere called Idudi where they have been picking up teen sex workers.

“The place is better than Naluwerere. It is full of young girls ready to serve us sex at good prices. They tell us that their parents are the ones who send them to make money,” said Ashraf Juma, one of the truck drivers.

A local leader, John Isabirye confirmed that girls between 15 and 18 in Idudi are involved in sex trade.

He however noted that they have been pushed into the trade by poverty.
