Justice Olalekan Oresanya, who made the decision, described Oxlade’s behavior as “despicable, horrendous, distasteful, and classless”.
The incident happened in 2021, and the leaked footage instantly went viral, causing a sensation on social media. The second person in the video, Blessing, felt violated and sued Oxlade for invasion of privacy and reputational harm after feeling violated.
According to Justice Oresanya, the right to privacy is a fundamental human right. He continued by saying that recording and disclosing sexual material in secret was unacceptable, especially when done without the other party’s permission. The judge further emphasized that the leaked film might have a long-lasting impact on Blessing’s reputation and career, supporting the justification for the N5 million in damages.
Privacy advocates and members of the entertainment industry have praised the decision extensively because they think it sends a clear message to anyone who engages in similar behavior. Many people have praised Blessing for taking a stand and defending her rights as well as the court for adopting a firm stance on invasions of privacy.
