Ghana’s Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has said that his country can ignore LGBTQ identities given that the West doesn’t accept polygamy. The New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate shared that he won’t tolerate LGBTQ activities if he’s elected asserting that they’ll conflict with the values in Ghana.
Ghana’s elections will see the swearing-in of a new leader with Nana Akufo Addo stepping down at the end of his two terms. While speaking to the clergy in Cape Coast during his tour of the Central Region, Bawumia said,
âWe will not agree. The Bible doesnât tolerate it, the Quran doesnât tolerate it and our African values do not tolerate it. So it is a no, no and no.ââWe will never allow it
Bawumia argued that while the West doesn’t permit practices like polygamy, same-sex marriages will not be legalised under his government.
âThey also donât agree with certain things,â he said, according to Starr 103.5 FM. âThey donât agree with polygamy. Are we forcing it on them? So they shouldnât force it [LGBTQ+ acceptance] on us. We all agree.â
The promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 was unanimously passed by parliament in February. The bill criminalises people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community and attacks allies who uphold queer rights. Anyone who’s convicted could be imprisoned from a few months to three years.
