What Is Snake Wine?

Snake wine is a common drink popular in South East Asia. It is an alcoholic drink that is prepared by infusing snakes in grain alcohol or rice wine. It is prepared in various ways namely:

Steeped

This is the most common way that is done by putting a snake in a jar of rice wine or any other alcoholic drink alongside smaller snakes and sometimes with medicinal herbs and left to steep for a couple of days. It is drunk in shots or cups. The live snakes are first inserted into the jar, causing them to drown alone.

The snake can also be stunned first by placing it on ice, after which it’s cut open, gutted and sewed to shut it again. Once it’s removed from the ice, it reawakens and thrashes around before it curls and dies. Placement of snakes in ice is most preferred because it reduces the snakes’ pungent smell by removal of the snakes’ digestive tract.

Mixed

The mixed snake wine is prepared by slicing the snake’s belly and mixing the blood with rice wine or grain alcohol. Special herbs can be added to infuse special flavours into it. Snake heart wine is prepared by placing a still beating heart of the snake in the jar of wine. Snake bile wine can be prepared by mixing alcohol with the bile and the snake’s gall bladder.

Is It Safe To Drink?

Despite the fact that this snake wine is made from a venomous snake, it is safe to drink. In the process of making the special wine, ethanol is used to break down the venom in the snake. According to an Australian website dubbed Pokies, snake wine is exotic though dangerous. In as much as the fermentation process may remove the venom, unregulated manufacturing processes may make the alcohol in the snake wine dangerous. There haven’t been any reports of snake wine poisoning.
