A South Korean court has given Squid Game actor O Yeong-Su an eight-month suspended prison sentence for sexual misconduct. In 2022, the 79-year-old was charged with sexually assaulting a woman twice. It is alleged that the sexual assaults took place when the actor was residing in a rural area for a theatre performance in 2017. O shared that he’ll appeal against the verdict and has seven days for the same.

According to the reports made by Yonhap news agency, O hugged a woman and kissed her on the cheek forcibly. Reportedly, O was also ordered to attend classes on sexual violence. AFP judge Jeong Yeon-ju shared that the records of the assault shared by the victim were “consistent … and appear to be statements that cannot be made without actually experiencing them”.

O Yeong-Su denied claims made by the Suwon District Court, that the sexual assault took place in front of the victim’s residence. O rose to international fame after starring in Squid Game a drama which sees contestants take part in a number of versions of traditional children’s games.

It was an unexpected hit on Netflix that attracted more than 100 million viewers globally within a few weeks of its release in 2021. In the following year, O was named the first South Korean actor to win a Golden Globe for his role as Oh II-nam.Reuters reported that the controversial accusations against the actor saw him dropped from an upcoming film in South Korea.

A prominent feminist organisation dubbed Womenlink spoke to reporters after the sentencing and shared,”Now we can say that the sexual violence in the theatre is not an old custom but sexual violence. The accused must stop trying to make his assault go away, apologise to the victim and accept his mistake.”
