Having sex involves body fluids and blood is not a fluid that most people would want to see on their bedsheets. Bleeding after sex also known as spotting or postcoital bleeding is a common occurrence and a matter of concern. There are various reasons why vaginal bleeding is likely to occur which include:

Birth Control

Dr Mahnert says that any type of hormonal contraceptive can contribute to spotting after sex. When women start a new hormonal birth control they are likely to spot between their periods or have breakthrough bleeding. The bleeding is common among women who are on ultra-dose birth control pills, intrauterine hormonal devices (IUD) or an implant.

 

After using the contraceptives, usually the body gets used to it and the breakthrough bleeding stops. However, the bleeding doesn’t go away, especially for women who use the implant. Some women who use hormonal birth control are likely to experience vaginal dryness which causes tearing and bleeding after sex.

Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness is likely to be caused by hormonal changes like a drop in estrogen levels after giving birth, while breastfeeding and also after menopause.

Chemotherapy can also contribute to vaginal dryness as it damages the ovaries so that they can’t produce any oestrogen and progesterone. Having sex before your body is prepared can contribute to friction which in turn leads to microtears in the vaginal tissues.

Bacterial Vaginosis or Yeast Infection

Bacterial Vaginosis is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria and it affects those between the age of people between 15 and 40 years. Dr Mahnert says, “Any kind of infection can cause inflammation and irritation, which can result in bleeding,” Symptoms of Bacterial Vaginosis include a fishy odour, itching, swelling, burning and a brown or white discharge.

It is important to note that some people with Bacterial Vaginosis do not exhibit any symptoms. Dr Gersh says that cervicitis i.e. infection and inflammation of the cervix, can contribute to blood after sex. He says,” But if the cervix is infected and becomes inflamed, aka cervicitis, there could be some small amounts of blood seen after sex, due to the rubbing,”

In conclusion, bleeding occasionally after sex is not always a big deal since it is likely to occur because friction caused by vaginal drying can cause tearing and bleeding.

Pain during sex and consistent bleeding after sex can be related to more serious health issues including an infection, cancer or an STI. If vaginal dryness is to blame for the bleeding it is important to purchase a vaginal moisturizer or a personal lubricant that will reduce friction and make the sex less painful.
