The leadership of Bugonya Anglican Church of Uganda in Uganda’s central Uganda district of Kayunga has fined a 23-year-old man  600,000 shillings(equivalent to about 171 US dollars) for having sex on an Anglican Church altar.

According to the DailyMonitor, the man was caught red-handed making love to his Muslim lover in the unfinished Church last week. He fled and is still in hiding.

The Church leaders decided that the suspects would, as punishment, pay for the purchase and fitting of shutters on all windows of the unfinished house of God.

The Church Lay leader,  Aaron Komugisha said that the 600,000 shillings fine is meant to cover the purchase of window shutters.

Esther Nakamate the assistant head of laity at the Church said although the windows had no shutters, the male suspect accessed the church through the window, and therefore the Church resolved to make him pay for ‘breaking into the building.

“We have resolved as a Church to fine him by paying for all the shutters because he broke into the church,” Nakamate said.

But the suspect’s father has pleaded with the Church and local leaders saying the 600,000 shillings penalty is beyond their means and the son can only afford to buy and fix one shutter.

George William Kanda, the Bugonya Village chairperson where the Church is located, said the suspect in addition to buying the window shutters, will have to repair Church furniture damaged in a melee during the arrest of the lovers.

“The exhibits of a head gear and a T-shirt recovered from the suspects are still with us and we are insisting on the couple appearing in our LC court,” the Chairperson added.

The Village Defence Secretary Joseph Kahinda said efforts are underway to have the man arrested and that they have asked the father to reveal his whereabouts by all means.
