Sugar Cane Workers Impregnate Over 100 Primary School Girls
Over a hundred primary school girls have been impregnated by sugar cane workers in two eastern districts of Uganda. According to a security officer in eastern Uganda, Henry Nanga, the two districts in which the girls have been defiled and impregnated are Luuka and Buyende all located over 150 km away from Uganda’s capital Kampala.
He said in a recent media interview that most of the girls are aged between 13 and 16 years. He said,” It is not good to note that over 100 girls have been defiled and impregnated in the last year in the two districts of Luuka and Buyende. Over 70 have already given birth although some did so with some complications because they were too young to give birth.”
He said that those responsible for impregnating them were men who worked in sugarcane shambas and sugar factories. He said that sugar cane growing and sugar cane factories were recently introduced in the two districts and it resulted in many men from neighbouring districts flocking to the two districts seeking employment.
The men, when they get paid for work done entice the young girls by buying them chapatis, sodas and gifts in addition to giving them money in exchange for sex.
He said that has led to many girls getting pregnant. The concerned men bribe the police when some parents report cases of defilement or pregnancies and nothing is done about them. Some parents, he said reach a compromise with the concerned men and they pay them some money so that they do not report them to the police.
