Ghosting
This is a practice where one suddenly cuts off communication with another person without explanation. This common practice is common with Gen Zers. Lack of communication not only shows a disregard for other people’s feelings but also prevents closure and resolutions in relationships. Healthy communication in relationships is significant in helping to build trust and maintaining connections and conflict resolution.
Unrealistic Relationship Standards
Social media and movies online portray idealized versions of relationships that don’t portray reality. Gen Zers may feel the pressure to conform to these standards often leading to disappointment when their relationships are not measuring up. It’s important for people to recognize that all relationships are unique. Comparing your relationships to idealised portrayals can be detrimental.
Emotional Detachment
While technology has enhanced connectivity, it has also introduced new challenges to interpersonal relationships. Social media presence can create barriers to genuine communication and emotional intimacy.
Gen Zers may also find themselves more comfortable expressing themselves through messages or emojis instead of engaging in face-to-face conversations. This may lead to emotional disengagement and disconnect in their relationships.
Depending On Social Media Validation
Social media has also become a significant part of daily life for many Gen Zers, however, it exerts an influence on their relationships. A concerning trend among many Gen Zers is relying on the validation they get on social media to define relationship success or their relationship status. Some GenZers prioritize virtual perceptions over authentic connections.
Hookup And Casual Dating
In as much as there’s nothing wrong with consensual hookups, Gen Zers have seen a hookup culture that chooses physical intimacy over having an emotional connection. Such a trend leads to shallow relationships devoid of mutual respect.
Lack of Boundaries
Some Gen Zers may neglect to establish boundaries in their relationships in a bid to please people or to avoid conflict. Whether it’s sacrificing their time and interests for a romantic partner or tolerating disrespectful behaviour, lacking boundaries may lead to resentment and a loss of identity.
