Professor Audrey Gadzekpo: Some Cultures in Ghana Support Homosexual Activities

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Professor Audrey Gadzekpo, board chair of Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) reiterates that despite the belief that LGBT+ activities are frowned upon in Ghana, there’s evidence that some local cultures are supporting these homosexual activities. She asserted that gay activities are ingrained in tribes like Nzema and Ga.

“The whole argument Mr Sam George advances, and it seems very logical that if you go into our history, because Kojo Besia is a coinage, it doesn’t mean that we practice it; look, I have heard people who were against the bill but have admitted that when you look into some of our cultural practices, there are homosexual practices. It didn’t come from the West.”

When asked to give information about the specific cultures that exhibit gay practices, she pointed out the Nzema and Ga peoples. The professor however didn’t indicate the exact cultural rites that saw homosexual practices which she claims are being practiced.

She stated, “Which one? Well, I was in a training, and somebody told us that when you look in… there are practices in Ga culture, there are practices in Nzema culture, for example, that sociologists have documented,”

The Anti-gay bill popularly known as Human Rights and Family Values Bill was endorsed by Ghana’s Parliament and awaits presidential approval for it to be enacted into law. Professor Gadzekpo that the legislation which criminalizes gay activities violates human rights that have been guaranteed by the constitution of Ghana.
The Anti-LGBTQ+ bill aims to criminalize all gay activities in the country. It proposes punishment that includes imprisonment for people engaged in homosexual activities and LGBTQ advocacy. It also seeks to prohibit the promotion of organizations and events in Ghana.
Individuals who are caught directly engaging in these activities face a sentence of six months and a maximum of three years. Ghana is among several several African countries working to rid gay activities in the society. Ghana is likely to be blocked from receiving financial aid from countries that uphold gay rights. Parliamentarians however note that Ghana is prepared to withstand whatever pro-LGBTQ countries throw at them.
