Vaginal dryness during sexual intercourse is common and can be caused by different factors among them age and psychological factors. Dry vaginas can cause discomfort and painful sex as such, most people go for various products like petroleum jelly, spit butter or even lotion as lubricant alternatives.
A number of products used as lubricants are not recommended because they increase the risk of infection or irritation. Lucy Rowett, a certified sex coach and clinical sexologist, tells The Body. “Not every product—including food products—is body-safe. And some products are fine to use externally but not internally, or fine to use for anal penetration but not for vaginal penetration.”
Plain Yoghurt
It could be a useful alternative lubricant as it does not dry out and has a suitable consistency. Although there’s no scientific research to prove its use as a lubricant, plain yoghurt has proven to have therapeutic properties which can treat vaginal thrush.
Egg Whites
Egg whites are thought to have a similar consistency to cervical mucus. Anecdotal evidence suggests that it can be a suitable lubricant alternative.
Virgin Coconut Oil
Most people generally like the smell and taste of coconut oil hence it can be used as a suitable lubricant. Coconut oil also contains anti-inflammatory as well as moisturizing properties. It is however not recommended to people who use latex condoms as a method of contraception.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera makes a good lubricant because of its good moisturising and soothing properties. In as much as aloe vera is safe to use for most people, it is important to note that aloe vera can cause irritation to people with sensitive skin. Pure and natural aloe vera is much safer than synthetic aloe vera. Make sure that you perform a patch test 24 hours before using aloe during intercourse.
Avocado Oil
If you are looking for a more neutral natural oil avocado oil is a better option since it has a less noticeable smell and taste. Avoid using it with sex toys or condoms since it is an oil.
