Kenyan Woman Found Living With Her Husband After Her Lover Reported Her Missing
On November 9, a report of kidnapping was made at Kitisuru police station by Brian Andore that his wife Mercy Awuor had been kidnapped.
However, in the turn of events, Awuor staged her own abduction with the help of her husband in a bid to extort money from loved ones.
In the statement released by The National Police Service (NPS) on the evening of Saturday, November 16, they narrated how the alleged victim conspired with her husband George Odada to fake a kidnapping.
Mercy’s other lover, Brian Andole, filed a report claiming the kidnappers demanded a ransom of Ksh150,000. The case has since garnered nationwide attention with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) launching an operation to retrieve the kidnap victim.
Investigations led to the arrest of one suspect, Chiranzi Tsuma Mbaru, on November 13, in the Gitaru area after his mobile phone was linked to the ransom demand. Still, upon further investigation, authorities established that he was not involved.
Further probing led detectives to Narok South, where they found the victim at her husband Ogada’s house. The two have since been taken into police custody.
A statement from the National Police Service stated that, on November 16, 2024, the team proceeded to Oldonyo Orok, Narok South where the victim’s number was lastly located, and found her at her husband’s house.
The pair has since been escorted back to Nairobi, where they could face serious charges related to providing false information to law enforcement, an offence under Section 129 of the Penal Code.
Earlier in November, Awuor’s story went viral after her husband went on TV to give a harrowing but suspicious account of how his wife was lured by one phone call.
Notably, Awuor’s partner unknowingly made the story more believable through his active search for his alleged ‘missing’ wife. Through TV interviews, Andore claimed his ‘wife’ left Nairobi on November 4 to answer a job opportunity but has been missing since after allegedly getting picked up by individuals aboard a Toyota Probox.
He stated that, at 3:00 p.m., he got a missed call from Awuor. He called back and she told him that they had put her in a Probox and were around Maasai Mara. He saw a new number calling and he picked the call, a woman was crying. Then someone took the phone and said, “Send Ksh 150,000, or I’ll send you a body instead.”
After filing a formal report at Kitisuru Police Station, he was referred to Kabete Police Station but claimed the officers were unhelpful.
In a shocking twist after being tracked to Narok and taken to custody, Mercy said that Gerge Odada is her actual husband and nobody had abducted her. She also told the police that she decided to end her affair with Andole and decided to go back to her husband in Narok.
George Odada also confirmed that he was married to Mercy before she mysteriously disappeared to Nairobi and started living with Andole. He also added that they have two children together with Mercy.
The police have arrested the three suspects giving conflicting information, together with a fourth suspect whose phone was used to demand ransom from Mercy’s Nairobi lover.
The case was similar to one in September 2024, when the DCI nabbed three teenagers for concocting a fake kidnapping attempt in a bid to defraud Ksh 6 million from the parents of one of their accomplices in Meru County.
The teens, two boys, and a girl, hatched the plot in a get-rich-quick scheme that was quickly foiled by police officers drawn from Imenti North.
