Kenya LGBTQ Family Activists Protest In London Against The Family Protection Bill

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Kenyan gay rights activists protested in the UK to voice their objection to the Family Protection Bill 2023. A number of Kenyan activists supporting gay rights alongside others from Tanzania, Ghana, Pakistan and Uganda participated in the street posts in London City. They shared that the bill proposed by Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament, Peter Kaluma is discriminatory. The activists shared that the bill is likely to exacerbate the situation if it passes parliament.

Kenyan LGBTQ rights activist Seth Ouma observed that Kenya will follow Ghana and Uganda in enacting the discriminatory anti-homosexuality law. Ouma fears that MPs will support it if the bill is brought for debate, disregarding violations of the constitution of Kenya 2010 among other universal rights and freedoms.

The activist said, “The persecutory attitude of Kenyans is rife with livid homophobia, and this fans parliament’s push for the harsher laws,”

Seth was among hundreds of gay activists who went to the 75th Commonwealth Service in London, UK in March this year. They protested against the ongoing criminalization of homosexuality in 30 out of the 56 Commonwealth countries.

Kaluma’s Family Protection Bill

The Kaluma bill is under review by the National Assembly’s Justice and Constitutional Affairs Committee. Following the Supreme Court ruling that approved the registration of the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, MPs condemned the court. They called for judges to revoke it or resign. On February 29,024, a gay couple was assaulted by locals at Naivasha restaurant.
