Elon Musk’s X platform formerly known as Twitter is presently allowing its users to post adult content with some restrictions. X has never banned or restricted adult content and had formerly hosted adult content with NSFW(Not Safe For Work) communities but over the weekend it updated its rules.

Twitter’s Adult Content Page reads, “We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality.”

“We balance this freedom by restricting exposure to Adult Content for children or adult users who choose not to see it. We also prohibit content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviours. We also do not allow sharing Adult Content in highly visible places such as profile photos or banners.”

According to X, adult content is defined as any “consensually produced and distributed material depicting adult nudity or sexual behaviour that is pornographic or intended to cause sexual arousal.”

This applies to AI-generated, animated or photographic like anime, hentai and cartoons. Some of the examples include depictions of full or partial nudity and also closeups of buttocks, breasts or genitals and explicit or stimulated acts like sexual intercourse or other sex acts, X shares.

A rep for X shared: “We launched Adult Content and Violent Content policies — but what we enforce against has not changed – we launched these policies to clarify our Rules and increase transparency on our enforcement.

These policies replace our former Sensitive Media and Violent Speech policies which means we continue to act on these types of content with the exact same philosophy.”

Before Elon Musk took over Twitter late last year, Reuters reported the previous year that Twitter estimated that 13% of posts on X platform were on adult content.

Adult content policies dictate that users who post adult content regularly are expected to adjust their media settings to place all videos and images behind content warning that requires to be acknowledged before it’s viewed.

There’s another option of adding a one-time content warning on individual posts. According to the new policies, X will adjust the user’s account settings if they fail to mark the posts.
