Demistifying Myths About The Withdrawal Method

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Withdrawal, pull and pray, pulling out and coitus interrupts are some of the terms used for this contraceptive method. Although 60% of couples have used this method of birth control before, some people still don’t consider it a real method of birth control. Before you write it off, you need to get your facts right. Here are some myths bout the pull-out method that most people believe:

Pre-cum Is Safe And Doesn’t Have Sperm In It

Researchers analyzed multiple samples of precum of 27 healthy guys and found that a third contained live and swimming sperm. Popular advice says that the sperm present in precum may be from a previous ejaculation and can be flashed out when a guy urinates.

The guys in this study however had urinated after their last ejaculation and sperm was still present in their precum. This study tells us that it’s possible for pre-cum to cause pregnancy.

The study also suggests that the withdrawal method may work better for some people than others. That’s why pull-out rockstars may have accidental pregnancies.

Pulling Out Doesn’t Work

Out of 100 couples who used the pull-out method correctly every time they had sex, about four would get pregnant in twelve months. Using the pull-out method can be challenging for a myriad of reasons.

Most people have days when they do not feel like pulling out for any reason. It’s challenging to withdraw every single time. Pulling out is a lot better than nothing. It’s as effective at preventing unwanted pregnancy as condoms alone.

Men can be Trusted to Pull out in Time

Couples with self-control, experience and trust can use this method of birth control. If any of these elements are missing, it’s advisable to use a different method of birth control.

Men who use the pull-out method should be in a position to tell when they are about to orgasm and to withdraw in time before they cum inside their romantic partners.

Therefore, this method is not the best for teenagers, people who ejaculate prematurely or men who are sexually inexperienced. Pulling out late may lead to an unwanted pregnancy.

Irresponsible People Use The Pull-Out Method

60% of women between the ages of 15-44 in the U.S. have used the pull-out method at some point. According to the most recent U.S. national survey, 5% of romantic couples who were using birth control were relying on the pull-out method.

Some people don’t consider the withdrawal method as a form of birth control and may not mention it when asked about birth control use.

Pull Out Method Is A Sure Way of Preventing Pregnancy

The pullout method can be an effective method of preventing unplanned pregnancy but it’s not 100% accurate all the time. The withdrawal method still results in pregnancy even when used correctly. 27% of every woman fall pregnant every year.

Even if a man pulls out pregnancy is possible since pre-cum can pick up sperm that has been left in the urethra from prior ejaculations and this may contribute to unwanted or unplanned pregnancy.
