Linda Okello has been awarded 6.5 million in damages by the High Court in Nairobi after suing the Standard Media Group for a photo published about eight years ago. Linda sued the media house and its publication The Nairobian alongside two of its journalists for publishing a profile photo of her in duty in a tight skirt.
Through her lawyer Tom Ojienda, Ms. Okello accused the media house of improper sharing of her photo and using her image for publicity and commercial gain.In a ruling dated 17 August, journalists of the Nairobian newspaper Pkemoi Ngenoh, Standard Group, The Nairobian newspaper and Charles Otieno were ordered by Justice Asenath Ongeri to pay Linda Ksh.6.5 million for defamation.
Linda’s photo caused a stir on social media as Netizens weighed in on the appropriateness of her grooming. Linda also became the subject of memes that went around on social media platforms. The court papers read, “Judgment be and is hereby entered in favour of the plaintiff against the defendants jointly and severally in the sum of Kshs. Six million, five hundred thousand shillings (6,500,000) together with costs of this suit and interest at court rates from the date of this judgment until payment in full,”
Lawyer Tom Ojienda posted on Twitter that Judge Asenath Ongeri awarded their client 6.5 million in damages. He said, “We have just won an award of KSh 6.5 million for Linda Okello a former police officer improperly degraded by the improper sharing of her image and likeness and the use of her image for commercial gain and or publicity,”
