Forget About Ghosting, Breadcrumbing Is The Newest Manipulative Tactic
Breadcrumbing is a manipulative behaviour in which one party sends flirty cues to their partner without the intention of committing. It’s mainly just to lure a partner without using much effort.
“Breadcrumbing is a behaviour in which one partner essentially gives the other partner just enough energy, time, attention, affection, or words of affirmation that provide some of the elements of being in a romantic relationship. However, the other partner is left still wanting,” says Dana McNeil, PsyD, a licensed marriage and family therapist and the founder of The Relationship Place.
Here are signs you are dealing with a breadcrumber:
They Don’t Invest in The Relationship As You Do
Such people make plans with you but they don’t follow through. They may fail to show up or cancel on you. They may even go absent or missing in action for a long period of time.
They Seem Warm Towards You But Act Cold
Breadcrumbers may take long periods of time to respond to your messages or to call you back
You Don’t Know Where Your Relationship Stands
When dealing with such romantic partners, they don’t define what kind of relationship you two have. They are also inconsistent when it comes to expressing their interest towards you.
Why Do Romantic Partners Engage In Breadcrumbing?
According to Kelly Campbell a professor of Psychology at California State University, San Bernardino, people engage in breadcrumbing for various reasons. One of the most common reasons is that they could be in a relationship yet they crave attention from other people.
Breadcrumbers could also be people that have a personality characterized by narcissism, a very shallow approach to relationships. Campbell points out that, breadcrumbers don’t feel guilty about manipulating others and playing with people’s emotions.
Also, such people could desire to get attention from many people as it makes them feel better about themselves. “They don’t feel comfortable or confident unless they get constant reassurance from others that they are worthy or valuable,” asserts the Psychology professor.

What do you do when you find yourself in such a situation?
Campbell says that one deserves someone who is willing to give them the same attention they are investing. Also, consider what your boundaries are in a relationship and act accordingly.

Remember to treat yourself kindly and engage in positive talk as well as self-care. Address the situation at hand- give the person an opportunity to change from their behaviour. If they are not willing to, just don’t take them seriously.
