Namibia High Court Declares Laws Banning Gay Sex Unconstitutional

Laws banning same-sex intimate acts have been ruled unconstitutional in Namibia in a recent ruling for homosexual rights campaigners. Laws prohibiting sex between women in Namibia were nonexistent prior to this ruling. Sex marriages in the country still remain illegal. However, for a same-sex marriage that happens abroad and returns to the country, their marriage is legally recognized.
Following the reading of Friday’s judgement at a high court in Windhoek, LGBTQ campaigners shared multiple photos of people embracing in court.
On their social media platforms, the group said, “Welcome to a new Namibia. A born-free Namibia,”

Namibian activist Friedel Dausab brought the court case and was backed by the British charity Human Dignity Trust.”It won’t be a crime to love anymore,” Mr Dausab said in response to the verdict. The UN hailed the ruling and termed it a “powerful step” towards an inclusive nation that would improve access to HIV treatment and health services.
The rights group Amnesty International is beseeching the government of Namibia to ensure the safety of LGBTQ people.The group has cited instances of threatening speech in the country during the run-up to the court case.
