Report Says, Men Who Slept With Men Record 61,650 New HIV/AIDS Infections
National Syndemic Diseases Control Council has revealed that men who slept with other men recorded 61,650 new infections contributing to 18.2% of new HIV infections while the transgender accounted for 4,370 new HIV infections in 2022.
The report further disclosed that in the last decade, a large number of men compared to women died of HIV/AIDS. 8,291 men aged 30 and above died due to HIV while 6,923 women died of the same infection
According to the report, men were less likely to be diagnosed, start treatment as well as stay on treatment compared to women. A report by National Syndemic Diseases Control Council has revealed that four people in Kenya die every hour due to HIV/AIDS.Out of the four infected, one of them is a child. The 2022 Worlds Aids day report reveals that HIV /AIDS contributes to 29% of deaths in Kenya.
Counties with the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS are; Homa Bay county which had the highest HIV prevalence at 16.2 percent, Kisumu (15.5%), Siaya (14.1%), Migori (10.4%), Busia (5.4%), Mombasa (5.4%), Kisii (4.7%), Samburu and Vihiga (4.6%), Nairobi (4.3%) and Uasin Gishu (4.0%).
Nelson Otwoma, the National Coordinator, of a network of people living with HIV called on communities to support men’s access to testing, “Most of the AIDS-related deaths in 2021 occurred among men who are less likely than women to be diagnosed, start and stay on treatment and reach an undetectable viral load. We call on communities to support men’s access to testing retention to care,”
